Michael J. Scarcella, MD is an orthpaedic surgeon in the Cleveland Clinic Orthopaedic and Rheumatological Institute in Cleveland, Ohio and Associate Clinical Professor of Surgery Cleveland Clinic Lerner School of Medicine.
Dr. Scarcella specializes in the non-operative and operative treatment of shoulder, elbow, hip, knee, and sports related injuries in the athletes and active individuals of all ages.
Dr. Scarcella is a native of Northest Ohio having attended and graduated from Padua Franciscan High School. After high school he completed his undergraduate studies at Baldwin-Wallace University. He completed his orthopaedic surgical residency at Cleveland Clinic, training under world leaders in orthopaedic surgery.
Following his residency, Dr. Scarcella served four years in the United States Navy as a Lieutenant Commander and Orthopaedic Surgeon. He was stationed at Naval Hospital Bremerton Washington, and served a deployment in Kandahar, Afghanistan. Throughout his active duty career he provided operative and non-operative care for active duty Sailors and Marines, veterans, and their dependents. He also completed training in Field Medical Service Officer training school. Dr. Scarcella received several honors during his time in service including, Alfred award for overall military readiness, Navy Achievement Medal in support of operation in Afghanistan, and Navy Commendation Medal for process improvement to total joint arthroplasty care paths and development of a multi-disciplinary Sports Medicine Clinic.
Dr. Scarcella returned to the Cleveland area following completion of his service commitment and pursued specialized training at the world-renowned Cleveland Clinic Sports Medicine fellowship. During his training he was exposed to advanced arthroscopic and reconstructive techniques for the treatment of complex disorders of the shoulder, elbow, knee, hip and sports-related injuries. Dr. Scarcella assisted in the care of athletes from the Cleveland Indians, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Baldwin-Wallace University, as well as other collegiate, high school, and recreational athletes. He participated in multiple clinical research projects, and was lead author on the project that won Best Research Presentation, Cleveland Clinic Department of Orthopaedic Surgery 30th annual research day. Dr. Scarcella will be continuing to provide medical coverage as a Team Physician for Baldwin-Wallace University. He is a Team Physician for Cleveland State University. He is also the Head Team Physician for Bay High School.
Dr. Scarcella is a member of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM), diplomate member of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons (ABOS), and fellow member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), as well as member of the Society of Military Orthopedic Surgeons (SOMOS).
Dr. Scarcella enjoys spending time with his wife Sofina, and they currently reside in Avon Lake. He enjoys outdoor activities, fitness and cross training.
