Dr. Vyas Rao is Professor of Clinical Surgery at LSU Health Shreveport. Originally from India, Dr. Rao obtained his initial medical degree in 1982 from Bangalore Medical College and his Master of Surgery in 1986. He received his Master of Chirurgie in cardiothoracic surgery in 1988. Throughout medical school, he remained in the top two percent of his class, obtaining gold medals in physiology by scoring the highest marks for the university in the first year of medical school. He also received the gold medal for community medicine in his final year of medical school. Dr. Rao is American Board Certified in cardiothoracic and general surgery. He trained under world-famous cardiac surgeon, Dr. W. Dudley Johnson in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in coronary endarterectomies. He has operated on many difficult and challenging heart and lung surgery patients with good results and is well trained in pediatric heart surgery and heart transplants. He has also offered endovascular treatment for vascular ailments and has helped many individuals with vascular abdominal and thoracic aneurysms. He now offers robotic assisted lung surgery. Dr. Rao serves as a consultant in Shreveport/Bossier City in the area of cardiac surgery with treatment of coronary and valvular heart diseases. He is a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, American College of Surgeons-Fellow (FACS), American Medical Association, Shreveport Medical Society, and the Indian Medical Association (Life Member).
