About

Dr. John P. Lyden has been a member of the Hospital for Special Surgery community since 1969 and is an Attending Orthopedic Surgeon at HSS. Additionally, he is a Professor of Clinical Orthopedic Surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College and an Attending Surgeon at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Dr. Lyden serves on the Orthopedic Trauma Service at HSS and the Fracture Service at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. From 1984 to 1996, he served as Chief of the latter.

Dr. Lyden's research is concentrated primarily in the area of fractures. He has published extensively on this subject, and is a participating investigator for a multi-center hip fracture study supported by a National Institutes of Health multi-center grant.

A native of New York City, Dr. Lyden graduated from Harvard University magna cum laude and received his medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He completed his residency training at HSS, and stayed at the Hospital to pursue a fellowship in hand surgery. He was a Lieutenant Commander in the United States Navy/Marine Medical Corps and served in Vietnam and at the Bethesda Naval Hospital in Washington, D.C. Dr. Lyden is the recipient of the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry and the Bronze Star with Combat V for Valor, as well as three Presidential Unit Citations.
